FC Lorient unveiled the «Mur des Merlus» on Sunday as part of its centenary, ahead of the Auxerre match at 17.15 in Ligue 1’s matchday 24.

L'Équipe reports that the mural features 56 notable figures from the club’s history, with several in attendance for the ceremony.

One conspicuous absentee was the emblematic Christian Gourcuff, 70, a former player from 1982 to 1986 and, above all, Lorient coach during that spell, then from 1991 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2014.

Mounted on a wall of the Grand Théâtre de Lorient beside the Stade du Moustoir, the fresco measures 13 metres long by 2.60 metres high. It honours those who have shaped the club since its 1926 founding, with a 2025 fan vote for 30 favourites forming the starting point for the final list after further debate.

Former coach Yvon Pouliquen, who lifted the Coupe de France in 2002, spoke of his pride at leaving a mark on the club. He said that triumph remains indelible, called the competition the most beautiful of cups, and noted that winning it with Lorient felt especially meaningful.
