Marcelino García Toral will leave Villarreal CF at the end of the season after talks over a new contract collapsed. According to Superdeporte, the club and the coach confirmed the decision on Monday.

Marcelino said the club’s plan did not match his own, with Villarreal CF offering a one-year deal while he wanted at least two. He added there was nothing to reproach, only gratitude for the freedom to work, and said relations with Fernando Roig and Roig Negueroles remain good.

He said he decided between December and January not to continue beyond this campaign. Both sides chose to keep it quiet to maintain discretion, and while some players were aware, others were not.

Looking ahead, he described himself as able to choose his next move, saying he and his staff can pause and be patient. He hopes to avoid a wrong step, just as he felt coming to Villarreal CF was not a mistake.

Assessing his latest stint after returning in 2023, he outlined two aims, to change a fearful dynamic, which he believes was reversed, and to keep growing, which he said was achieved with significant sporting and economic results.

Across seven seasons with the club, Marcelino highlighted the promotion of his first spell as especially dear, calling it vital during a very complicated period for the institution.
