FC Porto beat Alverca 2-0, both goals from penalties, then moved to cool criticism that followed the result.
According to O Jogo, the club used its Dragões Diário newsletter on Tuesday to reject suggestions they are favoured by referees and to call for serenity with the season only just under way.
It referenced the two spot-kicks awarded by referee Luís Godinho at Estádio do Dragão and said analysts from the three sports dailies judged both decisions correct.
To counter the narrative, the newsletter highlighted last season’s penalty counts, stating Benfica received 26, the most among clubs in the 10 main leagues, while Sporting were sixth with 15.
The message concluded that pointing the finger at Porto after a straightforward victory showed only desperation, adding that it remains only the first matchday.
