FC Porto have paid tribute after Nuno Cardoso, the city’s former mayor, died aged 64 in the early hours at Hospital de Santo António in Porto.
In a statement, the club said he was a defining political and civic figure who for decades championed causes he believed served Porto and its citizens, noted his constant bond with the city, and sent heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and all who shared his personal, political and civic journey.
A fervent supporter of Porto, Cardoso maintained a close connection with the club throughout his public life.
Cardoso led the municipality from 1999 to 2002, becoming president after Fernando Gomes, elected by PS, left for the Government. An engineer by training, he also steered key city portfolios, including Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture, and Metro do Porto.
Born in Peso da Régua in the Vila Real district, he taught at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and served as president of Águas do Douro e Paiva.
