Referee Federico La Penna has received death threats on social media after Inter Milan beat Juventus 3-2, having wrongly sent off Pierre Kalulu. L'Équipe reports that police have reportedly urged him to remain at home.

The Serie A meeting on Saturday, matchday 25, was played amid high tension.

The flashpoint was a second yellow for Kalulu for an alleged foul on Alessandro Bastoni, which meant a red card and fury from Juventus.

Three days on, La Penna was targeted by a wave of online abuse.

Bastoni, accused by Juventus supporters of simulation then celebrating the red card, also faced insults online.

Serie A referees' chief Gianluca Rocchi apologised after the match for an error of judgement.
