Fenerbahce have accepted Ismail Kartal’s departure, with Dirk Kuyt taking charge as interim head coach for now, according to Goal.com.
Kartal shocked the club on Thursday night after a 1-1 Champions League draw with AS Roma, announcing his resignation in the post-match press conference.
He saluted his players, thanked supporters, media, staff and squad, and said stepping aside was to clear the way for the club. He added the decision was made together as a team and that he did not wish to return as Fenerbahce manager.
Chairman Aziz Yildirim initially refused to accept the exit, insisting Kartal remained head coach and that they would continue together like a family. He said Kartal would stay in post until the president himself left.
By Friday, a comeback looked unlikely. Kartal did not attend training and was unreachable, while Kuyt led the session alongside Zeki Gole.
Kuyt will now prepare the first team for Monday’s league trip to Gaziantep.
