Fenerbahçe play-off key to Lyon’s Champions League finances

Lyon’s Champions League play-off with Fenerbahçe, first leg on Tuesday at 21:00, carries major financial weight. Progress would ease budget pressure and help keep a more competitive squad.

According to L'Équipe, Lyon have already banked €4.29m for reaching the play-offs, with a further €23m due if they eliminate the side from Türkiye. That is the headline sum awaiting should they enter the group stage in September.

Within a tightly run operation, the budget is estimated at €110m, the seventh largest in Ligue 1. Player sales are needed to fund arrivals, with departures and a lower wage bill still being pursued.

Only Monaco in 2016-17 and Lille in 2024-25 have survived the play-offs among French clubs since 2012-13. If Lyon fall, they will drop into the 2026-27 Europa League, as last season.

The fixed Champions League participation fee stands at €18.62m, compared with €4.31m in the Europa League. UEFA’s value pillar, covering TV rights and club coefficient, would jump from €6m to €22m. Matchday income would rise by 30 percent, with sponsorship, shirt sales and merchandising potentially higher still.

Lyon are under UEFA monitoring until 2028 after financial fair play breaches linked to owner John Textor. The club paid a €12m fine last summer, and if they meet obligations there would be no further sanction.

With Ligue 1’s modest TV money, Champions League income could allow Lyon to retain one or two players otherwise headed for sale. The squad would gain value in the competition, and trading remains central, as shown by Afonso Moreira’s €32m move to Bayer Leverkusen.
