Portuguese futsal great Fernando Cardinal has reflected on his brief Corinthians spell in 2024, praising Brazil's passion yet lamenting what he called unbelievable disorganisation, while stressing that family now comes first.
“For all the passion I have, it is over. I received offers from the Middle East, France and Germany, but the priority is different. Family above all, it is time to stop being selfish,” he told O Jogo.
“I had the dream of playing in Brazil and I was the first European to do it. I had never seen anything like it, but I also saw unbelievable disorganisation.”
“I was 38, going through depression after my brother's death. I thought it would be better, and it was worth the opportunity. I arrived at the wrong time at Corinthians.”
Cardinal joined in January 2024 as a high-profile signing after spells with Inter Movistar and Sporting CP. Injuries curtailed his run, and his stay ended by mutual consent in June.
After leaving, he entered a spell of inactivity, then confirmed his retirement in February 2026. He made five appearances as the team contested 14 matches at that stage of the season, scoring once in a 4-2 loss to Jaraguá in the Copa do Brasil de Futsal.
