Corinthians have moved swiftly to appoint Fernando Diniz before their Conmebol Libertadores opener, aiming to maximise a possession-minded squad. According to Globo.com, he was made the priority immediately after Dorival Júnior was dismissed.
The board believe Diniz suits a team that prefers the ball, though recent attacking output has been poor. Corinthians have scored only five goals across nine winless matches.
On Sunday, football executive Marcelo Paz said the club were seeking a coach to restore Corinthians’ best football, with more attacking and more finishing.
The board see his bold, disciplined, organised and intense approach as capable of raising levels in a squad they regard as equipped for the remainder of this season’s competitions. He has signed through the end of 2026, matching president Osmar Stabile’s term.
With a Group E trip to Platense on Thursday at 21:00 Brasília time at the Estadio Ciudad de Vicente López in Argentina, speed was essential. Considering his CV, which includes Fluminense’s 2023 Libertadores title, the board judged him the most substantial available option able to take charge quickly.
Talks progressed smoothly from first contact, and the deal was concluded in under 24 hours after Dorival’s dismissal.
After Platense, Corinthians host Palmeiras in the 11th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro on Sunday at 18:30 at Neo Química Arena.
