Fernando Diniz explained why several academy players went unused in Corinthians’ 1-1 friendly at Cascavel, despite being named among the substitutes. Forwards Gui Negão and Dieguinho, plus defender Yago Melo, were involved with the squad, the latter named in a senior squad for the first time due to a shortage in defence.
Corinthians returned on Sunday after almost one and a half months without a game and drew 1-1 at the Estádio Olímpico Regional, with Matheus Pereira on target. According to Meu Timao, the match was an inter-season friendly in Cascavel.
Diniz said the trio’s presence on the bench was precautionary in case further second-half changes were needed, and that the initial plan had been to keep them with the youth setup. He added that Gui Negão and Dieguinho would have featured if not for physical preservation and the wider Under-20 planning.
He outlined an integrated schedule with the academy, stressing the need for Under-20 match rhythm ahead of a clássico against Palmeiras. The pair played on Wednesday and were set to return to the Under-20s to prepare for that fixture, before rejoining the first team.
Corinthians next play on Thursday 23, hosting Remo at the Neo Química Arena in the 19th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
