Fernando Tavares has urged Benfica to target smarter investment across its sports after the men’s futsal side retained the national title.
Benfica closed the season by revalidating the futsal crown, celebrating a second successive championship and the 10th in their history in front of home fans. According to Glorioso 1904, the former vice-president used LinkedIn to review the club’s multi-sport campaign, praising results but questioning the board’s strategy.
He noted an indoor sports return identical to last year, six titles from 10, with continued dominance on the women’s side. In his view, excessive eclecticism has dispersed resources and blocked marginal upgrades that could have tilted key battles.
Tavares argued Benfica could have finished with eight or even nine championships out of 10 with more targeted backing, warning that eclecticism should not be confused with dispersal.
Looking to 26/27, he said the same flaw persists. He called for greater investment in handball, basketball, men’s volleyball and women’s volleyball, adding that even the title‑winning women’s futsal team needs strengthening.
Accepting that overall spend cannot rise above €27m, he urged the club to cut costs in less prominent sports. With market shifts, he said this is increasingly unavoidable, and ignoring it would mislead members.
