A dependable pick for Luis de la Fuente, the Barcelona forward has offered penetration from either flank, lately from the right, usually Lamine Yamal’s berth, while the teenager completes his recovery. De la Fuente also prizes his versatility, as he can lead the line or work wide without losing effectiveness.

Against Peru, he showed his full range, pace, high pressing, constant movement and sharp link play. His understanding with Pedri told again, supplying the pass for the midfielder’s 2-0. He was replaced by Borja Iglesias on 69 minutes, and Rodri wore the armband.

Torres has 24 goals and eight assists for Spain. His most recent goal came in the friendly with Iraq, and his latest assist was for Pedri in Puebla. David Villa tops Spain’s all-time list with 59 in 98.

With Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams still chasing peak condition, Torres is a serious option to start on the right against Cape Verde, and De la Fuente will not risk Yamal. The group stage, with opponents such as Cape Verde or Saudi Arabia, could let him add to his numbers and support a push to finish top and reach the new round of 32, staged for the first time at a World Cup finals. He captained the two previous friendlies, against Iraq and Egypt, leading the line in the latter.
