According to L'Équipe, Ferran Torres has been named the Champions League’s player of the week. It is the first such award of the campaign.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward struck a treble in the 6-1 defeat of Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday. The result left PSG top after the opening round of the league phase.

Initially quiet on the left, the 26-year-old came alive after the half-hour, scoring in the 31st, 47th and 57th minutes to stretch an existing 2-0 lead.

He edged Ermedin Demirovic, who hit a hat-trick for Stuttgart against Viking FK in a 3-1 win, and Raphinha, who scored one fewer for Barcelona against Feyenoord in a 5-1 victory. Marc Bartra was the other nominee after two headed goals for Betis Seville in a 3-2 game against LOSC.

UEFA’s technical observers select four nominees, then the winner is decided by an online vote on the organisation’s website and app.
