The KNVB Cup semi-final clash between Dutch giants Feyenoord and Ajax was briefly suspended due to fireworks coming from the stands at De Kuip, Voetbal International reports.
De Klassieker was briefly suspended just seconds after kick-off as both sides looked to secure a place in the final of the Dutch cup competition. Pictures showed a gigantic fireworks display caused the view of the field to disappear from a section of fans behind one of the goals at Feyenoord’s ground.
The atmosphere in the run-up to De Klassieker was already pumped up considerably in De Kuip before kick-off. Loud music and a performance by the daughter of Feyenoord singer Cock van der Palm created a sultry atmosphere in South Rotterdam.
A gigantic load of fireworks was set off in the stands behind the goal of Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther. Referee Allard Lindhout decided to stop the game immediately and walk to the side. After a few minutes, when most of the smoke had cleared from the field, the referee resumed play.
