Following a FIFA Council meeting on Thursday, a significant change has been proposed to next summer’s transfer window in view of the Club World Cup.

That competition is due to place from 15 June to 13 July 2025 in the USA but those dates cause complications with the clubs who are taking part, with many UEFA member nation dates for the opening of the transfer window ranging from 23 June to 1 July.

As a result, FIFA have offered clubs who are in the Club World Cup the opportunity to sign new players in an ‘exceptional registration window’ from June 1 to June 10 – allowing them to strengthen their squads before the new-look tournament takes place.

However, it remains at the discretion of the FIFA member associations in question to make the final decision on whether their clubs will be given the green light to do so.

In addition, due to certain player contracts expiring on June 30, which would be the middle of the tournament, clubs are also being offered a chance to sign players to short-term extensions which would allow them to remain under contract for the duration of the Club World Cup.

Clubs will also be permitted to replace players in their tournament squad who do leave during that period.

Finally, FIFA also confirmed at the meeting in Zurich that host nations for the 2030 and 2034 World Cup will be confirmed on 11 December.
