Some people are surprised that Tottenham Hotspur did not go all out to appoint Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, according to the Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.
He made the claim in his ‘Inside Football’ bi-weekly newsletter on Monday, and the Cherries have announced today that the 43-year-old is leaving at the end of the season.
Tottenham were linked with Iraola a year ago when they first contemplated parting ways with Ange Postecoglou. However, Spurs went for Thomas Frank and have since hired two managers.
They brought in Roberto De Zerbi last month after parting ways with Igor Tudor. A 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in his opening game left them in the bottom three.
De Zerbi will be Tottenham’s boss next season, regardless of which division they are playing in, but their fortunes may have been different had they gone for Iraola last summer.
The Spaniard moved to the Premier League from Rayo Vallecano in 2023 and has impressed since, helping the Cherries to a 12th-place finish at the end of his debut campaign.
They ended ninth in the league table last term and are currently 11th, seven points off the top five.
Spurs would never know what might have been with Iraola in their dugout and will now hope their latest managerial decision ends up being a smart choice.
Tottenham are back in action on Saturday when they host Brighton & Hove Albion before games against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea and Everton.
