Filipe Luís has reached an agreement to become Monaco’s next head coach on a contract running to 2028. The Brazilian had been linked with Benfica, Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the process was handled discreetly in recent weeks and surprised several clubs tracking the former Flamengo coach.
Sporting director Thiago Scuro was said to be the key figure behind the deal. A switch to the Bundesliga had gathered momentum as Bayer Leverkusen searched for alternatives for the dugout, yet Monaco’s project proved decisive.
Despite a difficult exit from Flamengo, Filipe Luís left a positive mark in Rio. In 2025 he led the team to the Brasileirão and the Copa Libertadores, elevating his profile internationally.
Jorge Mendes had been pushing Benfica to appoint him, but Rui Costa maintained his preference for Marco Silva.
