Flamengo were beaten 2-1 by Fluminense in the Carioca on Sunday, yet Filipe Luís framed the coming congestion as a privilege with major competitions approaching.

According to Coluna Do Fla, he said the central challenge for Brazilian coaches and clubs is fitting ideas into a calendar packed with games, while playing Libertadores and finals is a privilege. He noted that reaching the Supercopa requires having won a title.

He added that the Recopa demands winning the Libertadores or the Sudamericana, calling the workload an honour, and argued success will hinge on squad strength. He believes all teams will face difficulties in this marathon and said Flamengo’s group must be prepared, speaking at the Maracanã.

Flamengo now face São Paulo in the Brasileirão on 28 January, then Corinthians in the Supercopa Rei on the first of February. Internacional follow in the Brasileirão on the fourth of February, before Sampaio Corrêa in the Carioca on the seventh of February.

Given that run, the state competition is likely to sit lower in the pecking order. Even so, Flamengo face a real risk of entering the relegation quadrangular, so victory over Sampaio Corrêa could prove vital.
