Flamengo have sacked head coach Filipe Luis shortly after an 8-0 win against Madureira in the Carioca semi-final second leg at the Maracana.
The decision came overnight from Monday into Tuesday, with the team already through to the final after adding the 8-0 to a 3-0 first-leg victory. According to ESPN Brésil, sporting director José Boto delivered the news immediately after Luis's post-match press conference, and the club soon issued a statement on its website.
Appointed in October 2024, the 40-year-old former full-back, who played for Atlético Madrid, Chelsea and Flamengo, had faced criticism after a difficult start to the season. The Rio club are 11th in the main Championship after three rounds and lost to Lanus in the Recopa Sudamericana (0-1, 2-3).
Luis is a former Brazil international with 44 caps and two goals.
With Flamengo, he won five trophies, including the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Libertadores in 2025.
