UEFA confirmed that the Finalissima between Spain, Euro 2024 winners, and Argentina, Copa América 2024 champions, has been cancelled, citing the current political situation in the region after plans to stage the match in Qatar on 27 March.

The governing body called it a major disappointment, praised Qatar’s record in hosting elite events and thanked local organisers, while expressing hope that peace returns soon.

The Finalissima is a joint UEFA and CONMEBOL event that pits the champions of Europe and South America. Argentina, the world champions, won the 2022 edition 3-0 against Italy at Wembley in London.

Other alternatives were explored, but all were deemed unacceptable by the Asociación del Fútbol Argentino. The first option was the Santiago Bernabéu on the original date with a 50 percent split of supporters, which Argentina declined.

A two-legged tie was proposed, Madrid on 27 March and Buenos Aires during an international window before Euro 2028 and the 2028 Copa América, again with a 50 percent allocation in Madrid. That was also rejected.

Agreement was then sought to play at a neutral European venue on 27 March, as first announced on 18 December 2025, or on 30 March. That proposal was declined.

Argentina countered with dates after the World Cup, which proved impossible as Spain had no availability. It later offered only 31 March, a date deemed unworkable, leaving no viable window for this edition.
