Fiorentina hope Antognoni Number 10 gesture for Centenary can calm feud | OneFootball

President Giuseppe B Commisso announced Fiorentina will retire Giancarlo Antognoni’s Number 10 for one season, hoping to heal the broken rapport with the legend in their Centenary year.

The Viola were founded in 1927, so this is the season where they will celebrate 100 years in Italian football.

President Commisso, who took over the role following the death of his father Rocco, released a lengthy statement on the club website discussing the plans for the anniversary.

That includes an event on August 29 where they will symbolically retire the Number 10 jersey worn by Antognoni.

However, there are a few issues to note here, including the fact this retirement is only for the Centenary season and can return to the squad in the 2027/28 campaign.

It is also a clear attempt to invite Antognoni to the event and heal the bitter split that has been created between the former midfielder and the current owners.

As things stand, Antognoni was not planning to attend the Centenary celebration for Fiorentina due to his rows with former President Rocco Commisso and ex-director Joe Barone.

Whether this will be enough to resolve their differences is yet to be seen.

Now 72 years old, Antognoni wore the Fiorentina jersey from 1972 to 1987, seeing out his career in Switzerland with Lausanne until retirement in 1989.

“Giancarlo is not simply a great Fiorentina champion. Giancarlo is Fiorentina. He is Florence. He is the Viola jersey,” read the statement from Commisso.

“He is the most iconic player ever to wear Fiorentina’s number 10 jersey.  He is talent, elegance and loyalty to one colour alone. He is the love of a man who gave Fiorentina something that cannot be measured only in appearances, goals or trophies. A World Cup winner who carried Fiorentina in his heart wherever he went.

“That is why I want him with all of us. We want him with all of us. Giancarlo is part of all of us. On August 29, as part of the Club’s 100th Anniversary celebration, there will be many emotional and spectacular moments honouring Fiorentina’s history, but there is one moment we wanted to place at the centre of the evening: in honour of Giancarlo Antognoni and his unique place in Fiorentina’s history, we will retire the number 10 jersey during Fiorentina’s 2026/27 100th Anniversary season only.”
