Fiorentina will retire Giancarlo Antognoni’s Number 10 for the 2026/27 centenary season, the club said in a statement, lauding the World Cup winner as the embodiment of the Viola. The gesture is hoped to mend relations with the club icon.

Founded in 1927, the Viola mark 100 years this season. President Giuseppe B Commisso, who succeeded his late father Rocco, has set out anniversary plans.

On 29 August the club plan a ceremony to symbolically retire Antognoni’s Number 10. The shirt will be withdrawn only for this season and is due to return to the squad in 2027/28.

The move is seen as an invitation to Antognoni amid a bitter split with the current owners. As things stand, he had not planned to attend because of disputes with former President Rocco Commisso and ex-director Joe Barone. Whether this resolves their differences remains to be seen.

Now 72, Antognoni played for Fiorentina from 1972 to 1987, then finished his career at Lausanne in 1989.
