First defeat of the season: Kompany demands reaction after Arsenal loss

After the 3-1 defeat against FC Arsenal, FC Bayern immediately turned their attention back to everyday life in the Bundesliga. On Saturday, the Munich team will welcome FC St. Pauli to the Allianz Arena – a game that will be an important test of character after the first setback of the season.

At the press conference ahead of the clash against the Kiezkicker, Vincent Kompany not only assessed the London defeat, but also set out a clear roadmap: react immediately, address problems, regain self-confidence.

The coach made it clear that the performance at the Emirates Stadium must be viewed in a differentiated manner. „The analysis is always clearer once you have watched the game again,“ began Kompany. His insight: Bayern were on an equal footing for a long time. „We were stable in the first hour and played at eye level away from home in London.“ It was only in the final third of the game that they lost their grip and Arsenal exploited this consistently – and deservedly so.

The standard weakness remains an issue – until it is solved

The defensive problems with set-pieces in particular continue to concern the Bayern coach. Five goals conceded after set-pieces in the last three games show that the team has lost its balance there. Kompany does not want to dramatize the issue, however, but rather actively address it: „It is completely normal that it is an issue – until we close the lid.“

The PSG game was already a moment that challenged the team – London is now the next one. „These games prepare us for the big moments.“ The important thing for him is not the defeat itself, but the reaction to it.

Kompany gave the all-clear: there are no new problems in terms of personnel. „We are waiting to see if everyone can take part in the final training session. But there are no injury problems.“ The challenge is therefore not to compensate for absences, but to get back to their own level.

A game that comes at the right time

St. Pauli may be outsiders, but they are by no means a team that hides in the Bundesliga. It will therefore be all the more important for Bayern to establish control and dominance early on. Kompany calls for exactly that: attacking, scoring goals, living intensity. „You can’t wish for confidence, you can only earn it.“

Kompany sees the fact that there are only three days between Arsenal and St. Pauli as an opportunity: „The reaction is a positive thing: three days later, we can be better.“ For FC Bayern, this means: tick London off, take the lessons with you – and show that the defeat was a slip-up, not a trend.

With a win against St. Pauli, the record champions would not only underpin their top position in the Bundesliga, but also provide the right response to the biggest challenge of the season.
