The new league phase format of the UEFA Champions League is known for throwing up mouthwatering encounters. None more so than tonight as Paris St-Germain met Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes tonight. Ultimately, a first-half brace from Luis Díaz proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win for the Bavarians.
It took all of four minutes for this game played at a break-neck pace to burst to life. Bayern surged into a 1-0 when Kimmich and Gnabry linked up to find Olise in the box. Although his effort was saved by Chevalier, the rebound broke to Luis Díaz who hammered home despite Marquinhos best attempts to block it.
Having weathered the shock of conceding, PSG settled into their usually precise rhythm thereafter. A Fabian Ruiz shot deflected off Kvaratskhelia and crept wide, however the Georgian was offside. The hosts briefly thought they equalised when Barcola found Dembélé, but the ex-BVB man was offside.
Nearing the half-hour, Dembele's calf muscle seemed to give way which lead to Kang-In Lee taking his place. Suddenly, the Bavarians held a 2-0 advantage - the danger seemed to have passed until Marquinhos took a heavy touch and Diaz pounced. The Colombian composed himself before placing it inside the left post.
Josip Stanisic thought he had bagged a third goal for Bayern on the stroke of half-time, however the Croatian was offside. The drama didn't end there as Bayern were reduced to 10 men. Two goal hero Diaz quickly turned villain when his scissor-tackle on Hakimi reviewed by VAR was deemed a straight red card offence.
In a bid to add some more defensive stability to his side, Vincent Kompany replaced Gnabry with Tom Bischof at the break. Bayern did well to halt the Parisian club's influence despite their numerical disadvantage. PSG attempted to bring some life to their attacking third when Goncalo Ramos took over from Barcola.
The hosts eventually pulled one back when fellow substitute João Neves rose high in the box to head home Lee's cross. Manuel Neuer's goal came under siege as the veteran shot-stopper repelled Zaïre-Emery, Vitinha and Kvaratshkelia - nobody could get the better of the German as Bayern hung on for victory.
