A Habib Diarra penalty was the only thing that separated Premier League side Sunderland and Championship strugglers Oxford United.
The U's are firmly in the second tier relegation zone but Matt Bloomfield's side stood up to the Black Cats for much of the game.
Indeed, the decision moment of the game was a contentious one with Oxford United unhappy with the awarding after Christ Makosso was judged to have brought down Dennis Cirkin.
Diarra stepped up and made no mistake in beating Matt Ingram to make it 1-0 to the visitors with just over a half hour gone in the game.
Oxford United continued to battle and the duel between Will Lankshear and Luke O'Nien was a great example of that. Indeed, the striker was unhappy with the referee again when he was penalised for a foul on O'Nien when it looked like he was through on goal.
Ultimately, the visitors couldn't find the chance they needed to get back into the tie with Sunderland progressing to the fifth round instead after absorbing some late pressure.
