Fiston Mayele Hat-Trick Fires Pyramids FC to Intercontinental Cup Glory
Pyramids FC were crowned winners of the Intercontinental 3 Continents cup after thrilling 3 - 1 victory over Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli on Tuesday night at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah.
Congolese striker Fiston Mayele stole the show with brilliant hat trick. He opened the scoring in the 20 minute before Al Ahli equalised from the penalty spot through Ivan Toney just before halftime.
But Mayele struck twice in quick succession (72 & 75) to seal the triumph.
This victory sends Pyramids into the final stage of the tournament, scheduled for December in Doha where they will face the winner of the Americas Derby.
The Egyptian side will also bank 2 million dollar prize adding to the 1 million dollar they secured for beating Auckland City in the preliminary round.
The win cements Pyramids' growing reputation on the continental and international stage. Dubbed "Champions of Half the World" they've now conquered Africa, Asia & Oceania in this special competition format.
Goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy delivered key saves against Frank Kessie & Ivan Toney while Mayele's clinical finishing proved the difference.
Despite Riyad Mahrez & Al Ahli's star studded lineup, the Saudi side couldn't match Pyramids' intensity.
