Several Spurs players will need to be on their best behaviour as Thomas Frank returns to former club

Five Tottenham players are at risk of suspension ahead of their Premier League meeting with Brentford.

Richarlison, Micky van de Ven, Kevin Danso, Pedro Porro and Rodrigo Bentancur all have four yellow cards to their name in the top-flight this term and will serve an automatic one-game ban if they pick up a fifth booking of the season on New Year’s Day.

Two Brentford players are also at risk of a ban, with defenders Nathan Collins and Michael Kayode both on four yellows.

As per the Football Association’s (FA) current disciplinary rules, any player who receives five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches of a season will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition.

Spurs’ trip to the Gtech Community Stadium on Thursday night will be their 19th league game of the campaign.

Yellow cards do not reset, but from the 20th fixture of the campaign any player who accumulates 10 yellow cards up to and including their side's 32nd game will serve a two-match suspension.

Spurs are currently second bottom of the fair play table and will be without Xavi Simons against Brentford as he serves the second game of a three-match suspension following his sending off against Liverpool.

Thomas Frank will, however, welcome back captain Cristian Romero after he served a one-game suspension following his dismissal during Spurs’ defeat by Liverpool.

Romero is the subject of an FA charge, which could bring a further suspension, after it was alleged that he “acted in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field of play and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the match referee after being sent off”.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Frank confirmed that Romero would be available against Brentford and said he did not believe a decision over his charge would be made until early January.

"He's ready for the game,” said Frank. “As far as I know, it's something that will be decided in early January.”
