Flamengo’s star-studded squad is squeezing academy prospects, with Wallace Yan the latest departure as player profile takes precedence.
According to Globo.com, the 20-year-old forward was sold to Red Bull Bragantino for 10 million euros, about 62 million reais, after a mixed spell that included a goal against Chelsea of England.
A strong personality counted against him. With minutes scarce and new signings in his roles in midfield and attack, Flamengo judged his value could decline without a move.
The hierarchy now favours players aligned with the board and, above all, head coach Filipe Luís. That means meeting technical, tactical and behavioural demands, and showing daily commitment in training.
The shift has shaped other decisions. Lorran was loaned to Pisa in Italy until mid-year after a proposed sale to CSKA in Russia collapsed. He was sent back to the academy in early 2025 and did not regain chances.
Petterson and Felipe Teresa had their contracts terminated, with behaviour cited despite no compensation. Matheus Gonçalves left for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, and Filipe Luís had previously described him as anarchic.
In 2025 the academy’s first-team involvement was the lowest since 2019. Of 35 who featured, 20 played in matches without the main group or Filipe Luís. Of the remaining 15, only four made more than 10 appearances.
