Flamengo visit Cruzeiro at the Mineirão at 21:30 Brasília time on Wednesday 12, returning to the Libertadores after almost 80 days, for the first leg of the last 16.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Flamengo’s likely XI is Rossi, Varela, Léo Ortiz, Léo Pereira, Ayrton Lucas, Pulgar, Jorginho, Arrascaeta, Carrascal (Plata), Samuel Lino, Pedro. The right flank could instead feature Plata after tendinitis or Paquetá.

Alex Sandro’s right calf tendinitis rules him out. Luiz Araújo is still in transition from a left knee injury and lacks sessions, so is unavailable. Vitão has a left thigh issue and Everton Cebolinha is recovering from flu.

Cruzeiro’s probable XI is Otávio, William, Fabrício Bruno, Jonathan Jesus, Gabriel Rojas, Matheus Henrique, Gerson, Matheus Pereira, Arroyo, Kaique Kenji (Wesley), Kaio Jorge. Fagner and Lucas Romero are suspended, so William covers right-back and Matheus Henrique is set to feature despite a facial fracture seven days ago. Wesley is an option on the left, but his recent pre-season in Saudi Arabia favours Kaique Kenji.

Flamengo topped Group A unbeaten with 16 points from 18, five wins and one draw, scoring 14 and conceding two, the best overall record. Cruzeiro were runners-up in Group D with 11 points from six games, three wins, two draws and one defeat. The view is that repeating the last display, staying focused, pressing after losses, keeping the ball and shooting on sight could secure a useful first-leg advantage, with quality and experience potentially decisive.
