Flamengo and Cruzeiro relations strain again after Kaio Jorge talks collapse

Flamengo and Cruzeiro hit another turbulent spell as talks for Kaio Jorge collapsed, further straining relations between presidents Bap and Pedrinho. According to Globo.com, Cruzeiro were unhappy with Flamengo's conduct.

The negotiations were conducted directly by the presidents, without sporting directors. Flamengo waited for Cruzeiro's meeting with the player to submit a bid above €30 million, R$ 189.9 million, but Cruzeiro shut talks down.

Beyond rejected offers, Cruzeiro bristled at Flamengo's attempts to sway the player, with coach Filipe Luís involved. Flamengo readied a new proposal after signs of the striker's preference, yet the move did not materialise. Cruzeiro are considering referring Flamengo to FIFA for an alleged improper approach.

It was not the first flashpoint. In early 2025, a move for centre-back Fabrício Bruno stalled over payment terms. Cruzeiro sought instalments, while Flamengo demanded upfront cash or bank guarantees.

There was also a clash of versions around Luiz Araújo and Matheus Pereira in February. Flamengo said in a note it had received an offer but talks stalled. Cruzeiro said the proposal came via an intermediary.

Payment structure again complicated talks for Matheus Gonçalves in July. Pedrinho and Bap agreed his move to Belo Horizonte, then Flamengo reversed course, surprising the player. The clubs had explored €3.5 million, just over R$ 22 million, for 50 per cent of his rights, and he later joined Al-Ahli.
