Flamengo and Fluminense, who run the Maracanã, have blocked Vasco v Vitória from being staged there for the Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg.
According to Globo.com, Vasco had selected the stadium for the tie but still required the administrators’ approval to use it.
The club had not anticipated an issue, citing an agreement with the consortium that manages the Maracanã covering 2025 and 2026. The deal provides for eight Vasco home games at the venue in 2025 and 2026.
The dates are free, since Flamengo and Fluminense are out of the Copa do Brasil and there are no Brasileirão or Libertadores fixtures this midweek. Vasco had targeted the larger capacity and potential gate receipts.
The club played last year’s Copa do Brasil final at the Maracanã against Corinthians.
Vasco are now assessing their options before deciding next steps. The first leg against Vitória is scheduled for next Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time.
