Flamengo have rejected Vasco’s request to stage Wednesday’s Copa do Brasil quarter-final first leg against Vitória at the Maracanã. The Fla-Flu consortium said the surface is in poor condition and another game could aggravate it for the season.

According to Atenção, Vascaínos, Vasco will now weigh legal steps or seek the date from the Rio state government. The club is also considering keeping the match at São Januário.

The quarter-finals begin on Tuesday 25, with Vasco due to play the first leg the following day. The club prefer the Maracanã for greater attendance and gate receipts.

Relations between the clubs have frayed in recent weeks. Flamengo took ANRESF action over Vasco’s negotiations with Marcos Lamacchia, then filed a second notice questioning the rival’s financial health amid heavy spending this window.

On Wednesday 19, Vasco president Pedrinho launched a fierce personal attack on BAP, accusing him of hypocrisy and arrogance and of putting Flamengo’s interests first on issues such as the Libra revenue split.
