Varela and Anthony Valencia remain with Uruguay and Ecuador and are only due to rejoin from Tuesday, with director of football José Boto admitting the pair are unlikely to face Santos.

Arrascaeta fractured his left wrist on Uruguay duty and underwent surgery on Thursday 01. Evertton Araújo continues treatment for a grade three left adductor injury.

Gonzalo Plata has rejoined group training, and Ayrton Lucas is under medical supervision, with this week to show whether Leonardo Jardim can use them at Vila Belmiro.

Flamengo last played on 20 September, beating Red Bull Bragantino 2-1 at the Maracanã to reach 60 points and lead the Brasileirão by three over Palmeiras.

Santos beat São Paulo 2-1 on Friday 02, a fifth straight league win, and sit seventh on 41 points.

Neymar could return after injury, having not played since 2 September, and Santos hope to have him available for a few minutes.

The fixture starts a demanding month, with Flamengo set for seven October matches across the league and Libertadores, including a semi-final against Estudiantes (ARG). They meet Santos on Thursday 08 at 19h30 in the 29th round at Vila Belmiro.
