Arrascaeta has sustained a confirmed fracture to his left wrist while on Uruguay duty, and Flamengo have requested his immediate return to Brazil to begin treatment.

The club said in a statement that they are aware of the severity of the injury and that the No 10 will be reassessed by their medical staff before surgery. His trip back has the approval of club doctor Fernando Sassaki.

The midfielder was hurt during Uruguay’s 4-1 win over South Korea on Monday. He slipped without contact and was replaced by coach Diego Forlán in the 32nd minute of the second half. Before going off, he had scored and provided an assist.

He will miss the Copa Libertadores semi-final against Estudiantes (ARG), with the ties scheduled for 15 and 22 October. Flamengo are also working on the basis he could be absent for decisive Brasileirão matches, with a return expected only in a potential continental final.

This is not his first setback of the year. In June, during Uruguay’s World Cup preparations, he suffered a grade two injury to his right calf. The latest issue halts a strong run, and he has 14 Libertadores goals for Flamengo.

While Arrascaeta undergoes treatment, Flamengo face Santos on 08 October at Vila Belmiro, with kick-off at 19:30 Brasilia time.
