Flamengo will return to training on Monday 12, making them the last Brasileirão side to begin pre-season. According to Coluna Do Fla, only Flamengo and Fluminense had yet to resume, with the Laranjeiras club due back on Thursday eight.
The Carioca opener on Sunday 11 will be handled by a squad largely drawn from the under-20s. That group has been working since late December under coach Bruno Pivetti.
Most rivals are already in full swing. Vasco, Botafogo, Palmeiras, Santos, São Paulo, Bragantino, Grêmio, Internacional, Cruzeiro, Atlético-MG, Bahia, Vitória and Athletico-PR returned between Friday two and Monday five. Mirassol, Chapecoense and Coritiba reported back in late December.
Corinthians, Flamengo’s Supercopa opponents, were back on Saturday three after lifting the Copa do Brasil on 21 December, a break of only 12 days.
Flamengo faced PSG in the Club World Cup final on 17 December. They and Corinthians will have less than one month to prepare for the Supercopa on one February at Mané Garrincha in Brasília.
Outside the promoted sides, 16 squads will not receive the standard 30 days of holiday. The remaining rest is set for mid-year when the Brasileirão pauses for the World Cup, though many Flamengo players are expected to be on international duty.
