Flamengo’s 1999 title hero Lê has taunted Abel Ferreira after the Palmeiras coach asked for a “courageous referee” before the game on Saturday 23 at the Maracanã. Flamengo’s 1999 and 2025 seasons are being compared for title wins over Palmeiras.

“I always go to the Maracanã to watch this game, it is important to me. Palmeiras are a little ahead, but I love it when Abel starts talking, it makes things hotter. And it is Flamengo, on Saturday it will kick off again, a packed Maracanã, everything points to us as well, 2-0, no stress,” he told GE.

The barb came at the launch of an immersive museum celebrating Flamengo’s magical 2025, when the club won the Brasileirão and the Libertadores, held at a mall in Barra da Tijuca in Rio’s West Zone.

In 1999, the Mercosul final first leg at the Maracanã finished 4-3 to Flamengo, Reinaldo scoring in the final minute. That result meant Palmeiras needed to win the return to force a third play-off.

At Parque Antarctica, the hosts led 3-2 in a match of two turnarounds, before Lê equalised on 37 minutes of the second half to clinch the trophy for Flamengo.

Despite a star-studded attack, the only goal of the 2025 Libertadores final was scored by defender Danilo, who rose highest at Lima’s Monumental.
