Flamengo’s plan to build a hotel and retail complex at Gávea has received a Rio City Hall licence. The R$ 500 million project was presented to club councillors in June.

The scheme proposes two four-star hotels on the site of the Gávea stadium’s stands, in two towers of 10 storeys, with 348 rooms and 536 parking spaces. A shopping centre with 82 shops would be integrated, and O Globo reports that XP and BTG are seen as frontrunners to finance the scheme and are already assessing it.

An initial idea for a single five-star hotel evolved into two four-star units linked to a commercial structure. The hotel forms part of a broader plan from president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, Bap, which also floated an entertainment centre and an amusement park aimed at Flamengo supporters.

Key steps remain before construction begins, including selecting the hotel operator. Since the first presentation, Bap has indicated the club do not plan to use their own funds, with investor partnerships preferred to share returns without direct outlay.

The Gávea stands are rarely used due to nearby hospitals and homes, with crowd noise limiting matches, so the venue mainly hosts training and events. Separately, a mini-stadium at Campo 10 do Ninho do Urubu is under construction, due between July and August 2027, with capacity lifted to 4,500 from 2,000.
