Flamengo’s José Boto joins leadership talks at Portugal Football Summit | OneFootball

Flamengo director of football José Boto is in Portugal to take part in the Portugal Football Summit at Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras, Lisbon, from 23 to 25 September.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the three-day event brings together leaders, athletes, clubs, federations and football businesses to reflect on the present and future of the sport.

The programme features debates on leadership, recruitment and building high-performance teams, alongside conferences by national and international speakers on governance, finance and marketing.

For 2026, the summit has added Roberto Carlos, Deco, Edgar Davids and Tim Krul to its speaker list.

Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director and a former Portugal international, provides insight drawn from elite football, talent identification and sports management. Davids and Krul, both former Netherlands internationals, add experience from European football and the Premier League.

They join Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, plus former Portugal players Nuno Gomes and Rui Patrício, and Jorge Jesus, the current Portugal coach and ex-Flamengo manager.

Boto was hired at the end of 2024 by club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as Bap, to restructure and professionalise the department. He brought European experience from Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk and PAOK, replacing the previous model centred on former vice-president of football Marcos Braz.

In March he oversaw the transition that brought head coach Leonardo Jardim after a period of instability and the departure of Filipe Luís. Boto signed a two-year contract in January 2025, running until December 2026.
