Hansi Flick said he would only speak once matters are settled, yet he voiced disappointment over Pedro Fernández, Dro. According to Superdeporte, the 18-year-old has told Barça he will pay his six million euros release clause to leave in the winter window, and has not disclosed his next club.

The coach left open the possibility the split could still be avoided, even though the midfielder has been kept away from the first team since signalling his intention to go.

Flick had shown faith in him, taking him on the Asian pre-season tour, promoting him to the senior squad, handing him a debut and four appearances.

Seeking balance while sending a wider message to academy players, he pointed to Marcus Rashford as a model of integration and generosity, a global star who accepts not being an automatic starter. He said playing for Barça demands wholehearted commitment.

He added that when a player does well and merits selection, he plays. Fierce competition for minutes in midfield may weigh on Dro’s thinking, with Pedri, Olmo, Fermín and Gavi ahead, and impatience is understandable when peers such as Pau Cubarsí and Lamine Yamal are regulars at 18.

Flick argued that daily work alongside world-class team-mates makes youngsters better, and said he sees this in every session. He criticised what he considers a lack of perspective from Dro and his entourage, and suggested money might be influencing the decision. Iván de la Peña is the player’s agent.
