Flick talks Alvarez, Balde, Livakovic, Rodri, Lamine, Gavi, Christensen ahead of Barcelona vs Athletic Club | OneFootball

Hansi Flick faced the media ahead of Barcelona’s meeting with Athletic Club, addressing a wide range of issues surrounding his squad as the new season gathers momentum.

The Barcelona manager was asked about the club’s search for a new No. 9, Alejandro Balde’s uncertain role, Dominik Livakovic’s arrival and Lamine Yamal’s recent mood. 

He also offered updates on Rodri and Gavi while explaining his thinking behind Barcelona’s midfield and defensive options.

On Alvarez and Balde

Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez continues to dominate discussions around the club, but Flick made it clear that he and sporting director Deco are aligned with Joan Laporta on the matter.

“I think the president was clear, and Deco and I agree with him.”

Meanwhile, Balde’s future has attracted significant attention in recent weeks, particularly after his reduced role and questions over his place in Flick’s plans.

The German coach, though, insisted that the left-back remains part of the squad while making it clear that Balde must continue working to improve.

“He’s part of the squad. Whether he plays or not, we’ll decide that tomorrow. I’ve spoken to him; it’s important that he’s committed to us. 

“He’s very young and has a lot of potential. He’s improved, but he can improve further. He carries the Barça colours in his heart. 

“His job is to improve. He has to be 100 per cent committed to professional football and give his all for Barça.”

Flick on Livakovic and Barcelona’s transfer plans

The manager was also asked about new signing Dominik Livakovic and Barcelona’s plans for the goalkeeper position.

“We’ve discussed the situation. For me, it’s good to have experienced goalkeepers for the coming years. 

“We’re happy with Szczęsny; we’ll see what happens in the transfer market. We’ve got time to make a decision.”

On the possibility of further transfers, Flick expressed confidence in his existing squad and praised the work being done by Deco and the club.

“I have complete confidence in my team. We’ll certainly need to find solutions for some matches, but the quality we have is immense and that’s what we need to make the most of. 

“The club and Deco are doing a great job, not just for the present, but for three or four years’ time.”

Lamine Yamal’s reaction to his recent substitution had generated discussion, but Flick pointed to the youngster’s physical preparation and the short time he has had to train following his holiday.

“He’s had a few niggles, but we know he’s a genius. He had three weeks’ holiday and has only been able to train for a few days. 

“He couldn’t be at his very best – that’s only natural. We need to get him back to his best, but I’m grateful that he played 60 minutes for us and was involved in the first two goals. 

“That’s great, and it also gave us more options for substitutions, so he really contributed a lot to the match. We need him because he’s incredible.”

Flick was also asked whether Yamal understands why he is being substituted.

“I don’t know if he’ll understand. It’s normal that he wants to play and enjoys playing. 

“When you’re a champion, you’re always going for the next title, because you love winning. That has to be his attitude. 

“I can see that all my players have that hunger for a third consecutive league title, and we’re ready.”

Rodri set for minutes as Flick provides Gavi injury update

Flick confirmed that Rodri is expected to feature against Athletic Club, although the midfielder is unlikely to play a full match.

“Yes, the plan is for him to play for a few minutes.”

The Barcelona manager also provided a positive update on Gavi after his recent injury concern.

“He’s fine. I think he’s doing much better than he was after the match, and from the footage you can see it wasn’t that serious. I reckon he might need a week.”

Flick also spoke enthusiastically about the possibility of seeing Rodri and Pedri operate together.

“We’ve also played Bernal, who’s similar, but Rodri has more experience; he’s a leader. Together with Pedri, they’ll allow us to control the match, the ball and the opposition. 

“In Elche, in particular, we lost possession too quickly in the first half, and I liked it when Pedri came on because we had more control of the ball and more possession. 

“That’s what we need. Everyone knows that Rodri is one of the best, and I think we’ll enjoy watching them play together at Barça.”

Finally, Flick was asked about Andreas Christensen and his defensive options, with the manager highlighting the competition available across the back line.

“At the moment, we’re in a good position with the players we have in defence, because we’ve got other options.

“Andreas played very well alongside Gerard, and we’ve still got Cubarsí, who, in my view, is one of the best centre-backs and played a lot of matches last season.

“So I want to look after him a bit – and our team. He’ll want to play, and that’s only natural, coming off the back of winning the World Cup and being named the best young player. 

“It’s incredible to see him play in a World Cup like that, and I’m very pleased to have him,” he concluded.
