With the stakes higher than ever, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made his expectations crystal clear ahead of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid.

The message from the German tactician is not just about winning, it is about taking control of the tie from the very first leg.

Providing context to his dressing room talk ahead of the game, Jose Alvarez Haya has reported in El Chiringuito TV that Flick has issued a warning to his players, urging them to ‘kill off the tie’ at the Metropolitano itself.

“In Madrid, winning will be way more complicated,” he insisted.

Tough match ahead

Barcelona head into this clash having just faced Atletico in La Liga, where they secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory

However, recent history at the same venue serves as a reminder of how unpredictable this fixture can be.

The Metropolitano has already seen both extremes for Barça, including a heavy 4-0 defeat in the Copa del Rey and a morale-boosting league win just days ago.

That contrast is exactly why Flick wants his team to approach the first leg with urgency and precision.

There is reason for confidence, though, as Flick has enjoyed a solid record against Diego Simeone over the years.

In 10 meetings with the Atletico boss, he has managed six wins, alongside two draws and two defeats, a record that suggests he knows how to handle this particular challenge.

Still, numbers alone will not decide Tuesday night’s outcome.

Barcelona are fully aware that playing away from home is extremely complicated.

A strong result in Madrid would not only put them in a commanding position in the tie but also deliver a major psychological boost heading into the return leg.

At the same time, there are clear warning signs that cannot be ignored.

One recurring issue has been Atletico’s ability to strike early. Even in their most recent meeting, it was Giuliano Simeone who opened the scoring, forcing Barcelona into yet another comeback scenario.

That is precisely the kind of situation Flick wants to avoid.

Hence, the objective is to start strong, stay focused, and take advantage of good chances.

Against a team as disciplined and aggressive as Atletico, any lapse could prove costly.
