Sunderland have completed the signing of Lyon winger Malick Fofana on a long-term contract, an initial €30 million rising by another €5 million in performance-related add-ons. The fee could yet become a club record.

Sunderland Echo reports that a Crystal Palace move almost hijacked the agreement struck early on deadline day, but after further talks and the personal intervention of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, Fofana recommitted to Wearside.

Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi welcomed the deal, calling Fofana a player with huge potential who has the attributes to thrive in the Premier League and the right environment to develop.

The 21-year-old becomes Sunderland’s fifth signing of the summer. Known for pace, dribbling and direct attacking play, he is predominantly left sided but has also operated centrally, offering flexibility across the front line. He is relishing the chance to continue his career in England and pursue a long-held ambition to play in the Premier League.

The agreement also includes a 12.5% sell-on attached to any future profit.
