Florent Ghisolfi says Sunderland are hopeful that deadline-day signing Juan Riquelme Angulo will link up with his new team-mates this week, with visa paperwork being handled. The Ecuadorian is not yet on Wearside and has not been confirmed in the Premier League squad, and the director of football is confident it is only a matter of time.

According to Sunderland Echo, the move was pushed over the line via a submitted deal sheet, with the paperwork completed only minutes before the deadline.

Ghisolfi said the pursuit had been long-standing, and that Sunderland beat interest from leading European clubs. The delay, he noted, was Independiente del Valle’s wish to keep the youngster until the new year while competing in the Copa Libertadores and during their current season.

An agreement was eventually reached, and the transfer was announced as the summer window shut at 1am. Ghisolfi believes Angulo is a high-level prospect and a strong fit for Sunderland’s values, and that the player has long wanted Premier League football.

Once his visa is approved, Angulo can be registered for the Premier League and can feature in domestic cups. He cannot be included in the Europa League squad unless Sunderland reach the knockout stages.
