Matty Young has joined Huddersfield Town on loan, stepping up to League One for the first time. Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi described the move as a crucial stage in the 19-year-old’s development.

Sunderland Echo reports that the goalkeeper logged well over 50 senior games across two seasons with Salford City. Salford missed promotion last season, slipping on the final day before losing to Notts County in the play-offs.

Shortly before that play-off final, Young signed a new long-term deal on Wearside running to the summer of 2030. A youth international, he is widely viewed as one of the academy’s leading prospects.

Ghisolfi credited Sunderland’s goalkeeping department for his progress and said the Huddersfield switch represents another important step for a top young keeper. He added that the club look forward to tracking his progress next season and wished Young and Huddersfield well for 2026/27.

Huddersfield director of football Chris Markham called Young one of the country’s most highly rated young goalkeepers and thanked Sunderland for their trust. He said the 19-year-old arrives early in pre-season with impressive club and international experience, strong fundamentals, natural presence and the attitude the club expect.

Huddersfield boss Martin Drury said Young’s qualities and character matched what the club were seeking and that the player showed a clear desire to join. He expects close work with head of goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside to help Young contribute positively while furthering his development.
