Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young has joined Huddersfield Town on loan, stepping up to League One for the first time.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 19-year-old moves after two seasons with Salford City, making more than 50 senior appearances. Salford missed out on the final day, then lost in the play-offs to Notts County.

Shortly before that play-off final, he signed a new long-term deal on Wearside running until the summer of 2030. The youth international is regarded as one of the academy’s brightest prospects.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi called the loan a crucial step in Young’s development and credited the goalkeeping department for his progress. He said Sunderland look forward to his next strides at Huddersfield in 2026/27 and wished both parties well.

Huddersfield director of football Chris Markham thanked Sunderland for their trust and said Young is among the country’s leading young goalkeepers, with significant experience for his age. He highlighted his attitude and desire to improve and welcomed his early arrival for pre-season.

Head coach Martin Drury said Young’s qualities and character stood out and that he showed a clear desire to come and play for Town. He added that Huddersfield will work with Sunderland to further his development, and that Young will work closely with Head of Goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside next season.
