Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Belgium international Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract after his Lille deal expired. The 34-year-old right-back will wear number 12 and completed his medical earlier this week.

He is set to link up with Régis Le Bris’ squad in early August following Belgium duty at the 2026 World Cup. The move comes ahead of a season featuring Premier League and Europa League football.

Meunier established himself at Club Brugge after emerging from Belgium’s lower leagues, winning the Belgian Pro League and Belgian Cup. He joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, lifting three league titles across four seasons, then represented Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor and Lille.

His arrival adds competition for Trai Hume at right-back and could allow Nordi Mukiele to feature more regularly in central defence.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi said early conversations left Sunderland feeling it was a great fit, citing Meunier’s experience, leadership and professionalism. He highlighted the Belgian’s consistent top-level career and quality in both defensive and attacking phases, and is confident his mentality will have a positive influence on the squad.

Meunier said the club’s ambition and Europa League qualification were key factors in his decision. He had other options but chose to experience Premier League football for the first time, adding that he is excited to get started, help his team-mates and build a strong connection with supporters, while testing himself against Europe’s best.
