Folarin Balogun will not join Everton after his proposed move collapsed late on Tuesday, leaving the striker in Monaco for now.

According to RMC, Monaco were informed that the forward’s medical was unsatisfactory because of a knee issue, a setback that complicated negotiations.

The United States international, 25, and a former Arsenal academy product, had expected to sign on Tuesday 1 September. Everton, currently seventh in the Premier League, were set to pay €45 million plus €5 million in add-ons for last season’s Monaco top scorer, who hit 19 in 43 matches. He was due to sign a four-year contract with an additional year option, with two years left on his current deal.

His exit would also have freed one of Monaco’s four non-EU slots and paved the way for Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira, 26. In the wake of the medical concern, Monaco were said to have pivoted to selling Lamine Camara to Chelsea, with a €55 million agreement, without bonuses, understood to be in place for the 22-year-old Senegal international.

Talks between Everton and Monaco then reportedly resumed and a new agreement was found for Balogun to join the Toffees, prompting Monaco to cancel Camara’s departure. Another disagreement, however, prevented the Balogun deal from being completed.

As of Tuesday 2 September, Monaco have kept both Balogun and Camara. Transfer windows in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye remain open and could yet influence what happens next.
