A key player is impressing for Manchester United and Portugal – but it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo. Welcome to the new era.
Instead, Bruno Fernandes has shown why he is waiting in the wings to rightfully steal the limelight.
Portugal host Luxembourg in their latest Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday and the current Manchester United star is dazzling.
Fernandes’ trivela assist teed up Gonçalo Inácio’s opener, and his high press forced a turnover in the box, leading to Portugal’s second.
That was before he secured a hat-trick of assists, teeing up Diogo Jota and scored one of his own at the death.
He now has four goals and five assists in six European qualifiers so far and is being largely applauded by the home fans.
As per Squawka, no player has been directly involved in more Euro 2024 qualifying goals than Fernandes (nine).
After Ronaldo’s departure from United, he stepped up. Now he’s also becoming the main man for the national team, too, with Ronaldo unavailable through suspension.
