Nottingham Forest’s long-awaited return to European football ended in heartbreak as Real Betis snatched a late 85th-minute equaliser to leave the visitors with a point.

Forest, making their first European appearance in 29 years, were handed an early setback when DR Congo striker Cedric Bakambu put Betis ahead in the 15th minute.

The goal appeared to threaten Forest’s rhythm, but the visitors responded with character and determination.

Brazilian striker Igor Jesus was the hero for Forest, scoring twice in the space of five minutes to swing the momentum firmly in the Reds’ favour.

His first came from close range, tapping in a precise cross from Morgan Gibbs-White, before heading in a Douglas Luiz corner to take his personal tally for the season to four goals. Forest supporters in the stands erupted as their side looked poised for a memorable victory.

Callum Hudson-Odoi came close to extending the lead after a set-piece, but his effort rattled the post, leaving Forest still ahead but not entirely comfortable.

The second half saw Betis gradually wrestle back control, as Manuel Pellegrini’s tactical tweaks allowed the hosts to dominate possession.

Despite enjoying sustained periods of the ball, clear-cut chances were hard to come by for Los Verdiblancos until the 85th minute.

Antony finally found the breakthrough, firing a low right-footed finish across goal after connecting with Roca’s delivery, and silencing the visiting fans.

Forest had shown plenty of spirit and attacking intent, but the late goal meant they had to settle for a point on a night that was otherwise full of promise.
