ESPN are reporting that Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to sign a six month deal with Ajax. The 27-year-old has been out of contract since leaving Arsenal earlier in the year, spending time back in Japan to rehabilitate himself from a knee injury that has been a thorn in his side for some time now. Ajax will be delighted to have secured the signing of a quality defender who should really be able to make a difference for them this season.
Tomiyasu will join up with Ajax in January and will hope to give himself an outside chance of heading to the World Cup with Japan in the summer. There he will face a few teammates when Japan play the Netherlands in the Group Stages. Tomiyasu already has some experience of playing in the low-countries, having moved to Europe in 2018 to join Belgian side Sint Truiden. After impressing with the Canaries, Tomiyasu moved to Serie A, where he spent a handful of seasons with Bologna. The future Ajax man joined Arsenal in 2021 and played 84 games for the Gunners, scoring twice.
